How about this fun Birthday Cake conundrum? Don’t give up. Look around for other options.
We had planned for my sister’s birthday a few weeks ahead of time this summer…delicious pizza at our favorite pizza parlor with family, including her grandchildren. I was planning to try out a new lemon layered cake for her birthday since she told me that she liked strawberry or lemon-flavored cakes.
I had found one of Mom’s cake recipes, and planned to make it with just a few little changes. But, when I found out that the restaurant where we were having pizza doesn’t allow homemade cakes brought in, it created a Birthday Cake conundrum. No moist lemony layered cake to try on the family this time.
Since I’ve never been a fan of store-bought layered cakes, I started looking at other choices. One store I’ve had some pretty good cookie cakes. Why not?
So, I purchased a plain cookie that had some piping around the edge. So, there’s no frosting to mix. (I’m not a fan of the plastic containers of ready-made frosting in the baking aisle at the grocery store.)
I added mini-Oreo cookies, on edge, positioned along the piped frosting. Then I crushed up more Oreo cookies to represent dirt in the middle, like some bakers make “dirt” cakes. I knew adding something sour like gummy worms would appeal to the grandkids. And, I was right. They loved it.
The pizza was delicious and the cookie cake was a good ending to a fun evening.
The cookie cake was just right to serve 9 of us. Perfect! And, I’m sure the kids liked the chocolate chip cookie with Oreos and sour gummy worms better than a lemon layer cake. I’ll make that at a later date for my sister and her hubby.
This cookie was made to serve 10-12 people.
Sans pan prep:
No pans to prep. The store-bought baked cookie cake already comes in a pan...and a nice clear plastic cover.
No need to preheat your oven:
The cookie cake is already baked!
Gather up your Ingredients:
1 Cookie Cake from your favorite store bakery
6 Oreo Cookies
10-14 Mini Oreo Cookies
2 T colorful sprinkles, cosmic chips
6-8 Sour Patch Gummy Worms
Assemble your Birthday Cookie Cake:
-Open the seal on the cookie cake container and take the cover off. If the base is strong, there is no need to move it to a different base. The cake already had a cookies and cream frosting piped around the edge, with a drizzle of chocolate syrup all around.
-Crush the 6 Oreo cookies, making uneven pieces of varying sizes. If you like, pull the cookies apart and slice off the inside frosting before breaking up the outside chocolate wafers. It just depends on whether you like the white frosting mixed in the “dirt” in the middle of the cookie cake. (I actually pulled the cookies apart and kept the plain unfrosted wafers to crush. Then I put frosted wafers onto other frosted wafers so I ended up with a few “double stuffed” Oreos to eat later.)
-Sprinkle your crushed Oreo cookies all over the middle of the cookie cake, inside the outer piped frosting.
-Press the mini-Oreo cookies, on end, strategically into the piped frosting around the edge.
-Sprinkle the cosmic chips around on top of the "dirt" crushed Oreos. (Cosmic chips are very tiny colorful candy covered chocolate chips. You can sub mini M&Ms or other colorful sprinkles.)
-Place as many gummy worms in the “dirt” as you like, letting some of them “sink” into the dirt and sticking out.
-There you have it! An easy to make Birthday Cake…a “Dirt” Cookie Cake…for a sister who is “As old as dirt” and younger than me. It was pretty funny since the grandkids didn’t know what that meant.
It’s an easy task to do store bought cake that you can customize for the occasion. Kids always like chocolate chip cookies. And they love sour gummy worms and Oreo cookies, too!
Whoever you enjoy your Birthday Cookie Cake, make it to fit your occasion and “Bake your own Memories!”
